Nissan has announced there is a golden Leaf awaiting those from the UK who return with an Olympics gold medal. Of course the Japanese car maker has reasons to be elated given that its ambassador, gymnast Max Whitlock has already secured two gold medals - one each on the floor and pommel horse.
Nissan has announced all athletes from the Nissan Team GB and ParalympicsGB qualify for the golden Leaf hatchback provided they win gold in the 2016 Rio Olympics, InAutoNews mentioned. The Japanese car maker though has stated there would be only one Leaf presented to each gold medal winning athlete irrespective of the number of yellow metals they win.
In any case, that is turning out to be quite a few of the gold wrapped Leaf hatchbacks given that UK has already secured 16 gold medals with the event still on track. So while there might be more joining the Leaf party, they do have a good reason to aim for the gold.
"Giving our gold medal-winning Nissan athletes a gold Nissan LEAF is our way of celebrating their incredible successes," said Chris Marsh, Nissan Motor GB Marketing Director.
This isn't the first time that Nissan is doling out gold wrapped cars to Olympians who have secured gold. According to Motor1, Usain Bolt too was presented with a special customised GT-R featuring a golden exterior four years ago in recognition of his sprinting abilities. That car was later auctioned off with the proceeds - all of $193,191 donated to the Usain Bolt Foundation.
Nissan also stated one of the special gold wrapped Leaf all-electric hatchback is being exhibited at the Nissan Innovation Station at The O2 in London. It's been there since 26th July and will remain till the Games are in progress.
As for the car itself, it's likely the same as the standard Leaf hatchback except for the special gold treatment for the exterior. Then there is also going to be special art work on the sides just to remind us it relates to those who have achieved ultimate glory in the Rio Olympics.
