The Shanghai auto show has new relevance for global automakers, allowing the freedom once reserved for auto shows like Geneva and Paris to display wild visions of the future.

This week, Chevrolet took the opportunity to introduce the FNR, a podlike, self-driving EV concept.

Say what?

In General Motors' own description of the FNR, "a futuristic capsule design," the vehicle sounds impressive. According to the company, the FNR "has crystal laser headlights and taillights, dragonfly dual swing doors, magnetic hubless wheel electric motors and a wireless auto-charge system." We can't yet figure a way to spin "dragonfly dual swing doors."

No mention of powertrain on the FNR occurred at the stand in Shanghai, leaving the FNR's arthropodic body to stand alone. It's said to be an electric vehicle, and the FNR will also feature the latest in GM's vehicle-to-vehicle connectivity tech and driver assistance features.
