Here's a cautionary tale for anyone planning to be on the road this weekend: Two pileups in New Hampshire took out 35 vehicles altogether Friday morning, with at least one crash resulting in fire.
The collisions occurred around 10 a.m. on the I-93 north in Ashland; state police said that multiple injuries but no fatalities were reported. None of the injuries are believed to be serious.
While dire early reports had the number at as many as 50 or 100 vehicles, updates put the total at 35 cars.
In one of the crashes, a truck trailer caught fire after another vehicle drove under it.
The interstate reopened about three hours later. Traffic was detoured off Exit 22 until 1 p.m. on Friday.
Authorities said wintry conditions including icy roads and snow contributed to the pileup, while a state police spokesman told CNBC that many vehicles were driving faster than the 75-mph speed limit. The area had light snow that morning and temperatures around 29 degrees.
Traffic was also believed to be heavy due to the number of drivers heading to nearby ski resorts for the weekend. There are 22 ski spots in a 30-mile radius from Ashland.
Tow trucks came to I-93 to remove the damaged vehicles, some of which were completely destroyed in collisions, according to USA TODAY.
