This year's Los Angeles Auto Show has predictably highlighted connected cars--it is 2014, after all--but its other trends have been a bit more of a plot twist.

In something of a contradiction, the event has showcased eco-conscious "green" cars including Honda's fuel-cell concept along with decadent luxury vehicles as Maybach returns from the dead and General Motors looks to revitalize Cadillac.

Indulgence and frugality alike are available here: While the average price of gasoline is falling all around the country, carmakers are still working to offer ever-improving fuel economy.

We all know cars will drive themselves in the near future, right? Advanced infotainment systems, high-speed data connection and Wi-Fi hotspot capability are all part of a future where cars are basically computers on wheels. This year's Connected Car Expo featured offerings from Audi, Hyundai, Volvo and more.

As for the rise of the luxury vehicle, we'll credit the improving economy and falling gas prices with giving automakers new hope for pricey offerings that aren't terribly eco-conscious.
