Apple and Nordstrom are considering working together to make a mobile-based payments system, which some industry experts think could debut with the next-generation iPhone.
Talks of a partnership was first reported by Bank Innovation on Sept. 2.
Nordstrom told employees the company upgraded its current iPod touch-based mobile point-of-sale hardware a few weeks ago, with new features capable of supporting the "most recent iPhone" devices.
Details are still unclear, though the publication supposedly verified Nordstrom's new POS terminals as identical to EasyPay units used by the Apple Store.
Sources also told the website that Apple decided on Nordstrom after seeking out a launch partner with an established high-end brand and wide brick-and-mortar reach, according to the report.
In theory, the partnership makes sense, since a new payments platform would need a broad consumer adoption for any chance at success.
Nordstrom isn't the only mega company in talks with the iPhone-maker however. Reports were released this weekend claiming American Express, MasterCard, and Visa all reached deals for the mobile platform.
Apple invited media last week to an event in its hometown of Cupertino, California, on Sept. 9.
The company is expected to debut a larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones at the event.
The devices are expected to run on Apple's next-gen iOS 8.
Rumored specs for the next iPhone includes: 104 x 960 pixel resolution, a faster A8 processor, camera upgrades, and a more durable, sapphire screen.
Apple's "iWatch" could also be unveiled during the event, though nothing has been confirmed officially by the company.
Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple fans shouldn't expect the next iPhone to come with a reversible version of the Lightning charge cable or a more powerful iPhone power adapter.
