The famous Winklevoss twins say they have purchased tickets on a commercial venture into space using bitcoins, the virtual currency that still makes people uneasy.
The trip will be on the SpaceShipTwo, which is part of Virgin Galactic, billionaire Richard Branson's commercial spaceflight endeavor, Reuters reported. Tickets for the high-altitude flight on the six-passenger, two-pilot vessel cost $250,000 apiece.
The price of passage comes to about 375 bitcoins at Wednesday's price, CNNMoney reported.
Known for their infamous skirmish with Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss have been campaigning hard for bitcoin.
Tyler Winklevoss said in a blog post that Bitcoin and the space endeavor both have the potential to change how we view the world. He listed Marco Polo, Nicolas Copernicus and Christopher Columbus as inspirations as he and his brother embark on new discoveries in technology.
"It is in this vein that Cameron and I contemplate our tickets into space--as seed capital supporting a new technology that may forever change the way we travel, purchased with a new technology that may forever change the way we transact," he wrote.
The flight will be propelled into the air by a carrier jet and reach a height of at least 65 miles above Earth.
While others have bought tickets for the space venture using bitcoin as well, the brothers are the biggest names to get in on the venture using the virtual currency.
Intended to be a universal form of money exchange, bitcoin can be digitally traded between peers outside of central control. Even though its value has shot up in the past year, few retailers accept the currency, and recent scandals have threatened its reputation.
The volatile currency received an especially rough blow when Mt. Gox, one of bitcoin's largest exchanges, filed for bankruptcy last week after incurring $64 million in debt.
