"The Winds of Winter" has been highly anticipated by millions of its followers for years now. Interestingly, fans have been amazingly patient with the long-overdue delays of the sixth novel of "A Song of Ice and Fire." In our search for clues, GRRM's comment seems to confirm the book is coming out before president Trump ends his term. In addition, reports are now pointing out two possible major delay causes why George R.R. Martin has not made an official release date announcement.

GRRM has released a statement confirming the release of the "TWoW." In a Facebook discussion about Wild Cards as posted in Twitter, a fan mentioned it is understandable if it will take four more years to finish "The Winds of Winter" and added his complaints about the current president while waiting for the new novel. Surprisingly, the renowned author replied with "It is not going to take that long..." which confirms that fans do not need to wait four more years. Although there was no mention of the exact release date, the time frame was at least confirmed.
With regards to delays, one possible major delay cause points to the plot twist that GRRM has mentioned from his interview last year. In a Reddit discussion, it highlighted the repercussions of such twist in the much-awaited book.
Apparently, GRRM has noted in an interview last year that he has come up with a great idea which will form a twist in the upcoming "The Winds of Winter." This twist is something that the TV series "Game of Thrones" could not integrate into the show.
Based on GRRM's statement, it seems that the twist he has in mind is a major twist that will create a domino effect in the storyline. This twist appears to be an exciting part to look forward to in the book. However, this also meant that fans will have to wait further as the twist will require major revisions which also meant a lot of work for George R.R. Martin.
Unfortunately, this also meant a longer time work, maybe a year or two more, which results to delaying the release date as well. Since the author has come up with the twist last year, the book's completion might be extended this year or until next year.
Meanwhile, another possible major delay cause for "TWoW" is the fact that the author has prioritized to release a prequel short story for "A Song of Ice and Fire." The prequel is titled "Sons of Dragons" and is set to be published this October, the National reported.
The "Sons of Dragons" is a part of the novel series "The Book of Swords." It will feature the Targaryens' history. The prequel revolves around Aenys I and Maegor The Cruel, who are the second and third rulers in Westeros.
With all the speculations coming out for the release date of "The Winds of Winter," it seems that the 70th birthday gift theory is valid. As previously reported, the book is speculated to come out in celebration of George R.R. Martin's 70th birthday next year. This schedule agrees with the Reddit discussion pointing to a release date next year.
