For those who have ever felt a little hesitant when handing over their keys to a valet, the new 2014 Chevrolet Impala has something for you. The redesigned sedan will reportedly offer a "valet mode" that allows someone unknown take the wheel of your vehicle without seeing personal items and information according to a General Motors press release.
The new model includes an 8-inch center stack display unit that acts as an interactive touch screen for the next Generation Chevy MyLink system, but is also a PIN-activated retractable faceplate over a secure storage bin.
The bin is large enough to hold valuables like a wallet, MP3 player, and a smartphone. Contact information and addresses stored on MyLink are also PIN-locked so no one else can steal your information.
"Valet mode is the kind of feature that Impala customers will appreciate," said Chris Perry, Chevrolet vice president of Global Marketing in the company press release. "It is one of many great new features on our newest MyLink and a small part of Impala's overall technology package."
Those who purchase a new Impala will be able to access valet mode through MyLink's Settings menu by entering a four-digit code, similar to a hotel safe. A confirmation entry of the code will lock the bin, thus securing personal information.
The company indicated that customer clinic participants liked the idea of a valet mode, especially young or new car buyers. Several studies showed that the bin addresses a number of frequently expressed concerns about the need for a secure place to keep personal items.
"We were able to move the MyLink system's electronics to another location in the vehicle, effectively creating the space behind the touch screen," said Matt Highstrom, General Motors human-machine interface designer in the press release.
Based off consumer research, interviews and online voting, designers of MyLink developed four graphic appearances or "skins" options that customers can select through the Settings menu. The options include:
- Contemporary: The base, and simple interface that is neither colorful or busy, designed for people who want to get to their apps and programs right away
- Edge: A youth-oriented option, with a more "dynamic" feel and vibrant colors.
- Main Street: An all-around, crowd-pleasing design which features primary colors.
- Velocity: A sleek option with a carbon fiber background appearance, designed for driving enthusiasts.
"We can't design a custom Impala interior for every customer, but we can give them the next best thing - an infotainment system that reflects their tastes and features that meet their needs," said Matt Fuligni, design manager, Chevrolet User Experience in the press release.
