Fords' quest of making a fully develop self-driving vehicles could be delayed with issues about the progression of autonomous systems. Level 3 must be maintained to give drivers a chance to take the wheel in a certain situation, in which Fords' plan is going against with by aiming a Level 5 vehicle.
Not long ago, Ford wanted by the end of 2021 to remove humans out of the equation when it comes to driving by completely removing the steering wheel and pedals. According to MotorTrend, companies in Detroit, manufacturer of Ford, would add ways during autonomous car test runs to keep its engineers of the car as alert as possible.
They would put alarm bells, lights and even a second engineer to do so in order to monitor the sedentary driving during an autonomous drive. These test runs in making the driver as alert as possible is not working as they tend to be lax inside the car.
Level 0 requires constant human attention, just like what a normal driver does when he is on the road. Level 5 requires no assistance at all. Level 3 in terms of its "conditional automation" where the human driver must respond to the vehicles request and intervene as fast as possible and if it is necessary.
Furthermore, Spectrum writes that automakers still favors using the stopgap of level 3. This enables a driver in less than 10 seconds to wake up and take command of the vehicle. Audi also announced that it would release a Level 3 vehicle within the year, but would aim for a level 4 in three years.
10 seconds seems like a lot of time in your hands, but could seem short while asleep or busy using gadgets and smartphones. Most automakers believe that humans should assist the self-driving system to avoid a collision in emergencies or complicated situations because a distracted human being would only make matters worst on a life and death situation. Fully develop self-driving vehicles that Ford aims to create would not be on the process just yet as issues.
