A study released this week by Digitas, a digitally-led, global integrated brand agency and Brandwatch, a social media monitoring company, analyzed approximately 1.6 million social mentions of Valentine's Day occurring on news and general media sites, forums, blogs and social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter from Nov. 2012 through Feb. 2013.
The results showed that 45,000 conversations mention travel plans on Valentine's Day, suggesting that Americans are planning on or considering traveling to celebrate the special holiday.
Over thirty percent of all travel-related mentions referenced traveling by air, where as 37 percent mentioned traveling by car. The majority of air travel conversations were by couples, where a majority of road trips planned were by groups of friends.
Valentine's Day Travel Plans
The study states that 70 percent of people talking about taking a trip for Valentine's Day will be traveling to domestic locations. The top five destinations reported by the study includes:
1. New York
2. San Francisco
3. Chicago
4. Las Vegas
5. Los Angeles
Traveling in the U.S. was mentioned in more locations that trips abroad to international destinations. The top five international destinations that over 30 percent of people are discussing include:
1. Paris
2. London
3. Barcelona
4. Sydney
5. Vancouver
Other popular ideas being mentioned on the web include outdoors activities according to the study. To avoid the cold weather, 33 percent of people going away will be going to a warm location, where as 21 percent are planning on going skiing or snowboarding. Only four percent are planning on going wine tasting.
