Toyota Motors said Wednesday that they will be recalling 2.77 million vehicles world-wide due to a water pump issue and a steering shaft defect that could result in a steering problem for Toyota owners. Two problems have occurred in Toyota vehicles, but no accidents have been reported yet to the company.
Approximately 1.51 million vehicles are being recalled due to the steering issue in Japan alone and another 670,000 in the U.S. according to USA Today. Toyota models involved in the steering wheel defect recall include the Toyota Corolla and Prius Hybrid models made from 2000 to 2011 in Japan.
Of the vehicles being recalled, 620,000 have defective water pumps in addition to the steering defect according to USA Today. 10,000 vehicles being recalled have just the pump issue which can be found in Prius models released from 2001 to 2010.
The recall comes a little under a month after Toyota recalled over 7.4 million vehicles for faulty power window switches that could be a fire hazard to Toyota owners. The recall was the biggest since Ford took 8 million vehicles off the road in 1996 according to The Huffington Post.
The huge recall comes as another blow to Toyota as they have been trying to rebuilt their reputation after the huge recall earlier this year. They have been promising customers and critics that they have put more of a focus on quality control and monitoring workers to make sure they are being as precise as possible compared to recent years.
The recalls haven't affected sale numbers however, as the company is currently on course to regain its status as the world's number one automaker for 2012 after the company predicted they will earn somewhere around $9.7 billion for the full fiscal year compared to $3.5 billion the company made a year earlier.
