The Porsche 911 was first introduced in the fall of 1963 at the Frankfurt Auto Salon and has since become one of the most iconic car designs ever developed. The vehicle helped launch Porsche to commercial and competition success and a dignified reputation which they have kept ever since.
The car was first named the Type 7 during its prototype stage and was then renamed to its assigned model number of 901. Copyright complications forced Porsche to rename the car, and the company chose to go with 911, a name that has become legendary over the years.
The vehicle was designed by the Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche, who is the grandson of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. The first series of 911 cars broke new technological ground with a horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine that would become the backbone of generations of Porsche sports and racing cars alike.
"The profile of Porsche's 911 is instantly recognizable," said Bill Warner, founder and chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance said in a press release. "The 911's shape has remained fresh, contemporary and essentially unchanged since the day the first 911 was built a half-century ago. That must be the best and purest definition of a truly great design."
The 911 is still a success in showrooms and with racers who continue to use the vehicles on courses all around the world. In its half-century existence, the engine displacement of the 911 has doubled. The 911 has also been turbocharged, making it arguably one of the fastest accelerating cars for highway use. In Feb. of this year Porsche introduced the latest version of the 911, called the 991.
The 2013 edition of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance will be held on Mar. 8-10 on the 10th and 18th fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach adjacent to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, Fla. The show's foundation has donated almost $1.8 million to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida Inc. and other charities on Florida's First Coast since first forming in 1996.
