Apple iPhone 5 Likely to Sport A6 Quad-Core Processor with 4G LTE, Upsetting Samsung Galaxy S3

The recent rumor from Digitimes said the next smartphone from Apple will come with A6 quad-core processor. The “iPhone 5” may have both quad-core processor and 4G LTE, which Samsung Galaxy S3 failed to achieve in both Europe and United States.

It was previously conceived that Samsung’s quad-core Exynos 4 processor was not able to handle 4G LTE. Hence Europe got quad-core with only 3G, and United States had to settle with a dual-core processor. Although Korea will get a quad-core processor with 3G LTE soon, it is not likely for Samsung to have it ready in the U.S. market before Apple launches its iPhone 5.

If the rumor holds true, then Apple may have an upper hand at this fall’s smartphone battle against the Korea electronic giant.

Samsung launched Galaxy S3 last month in the U.S. market, and the month before in Europe. The high-performance device is expected to challenge the throne that Apple iPhone used to have. When the phone was released, it was so popular that wireless carriers had difficulty in keeping up with the demand, pushing back the launch.

Galaxy S3 has 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, and sports Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It has two cameras – 8.0-megapixle rear and 1.9-megapixle front. While the device only has dual-core processor, it sports 4G LTE and also the near-field-communication (NFC). Galaxy S3 had been considered the “iPhone killer” among Android users.

But Apple had been rumored to plan something big this fall to battle Galaxy S3. Since the WWDC preview of iOS 6, which Apple announced to release this fall, people have suspected the iPhone 5 to be released around the same time. Considering the fact that iPhone 4S was launched in October, 2011, the same month this year is likely for Apple to showcase the next model. There are, however, rumors that Apple may rush the launch early in September, of even in August, to enter the battle early.

Rumor has it that Apple has increased the screen size to 4.0 inches from previous 3.5-inch screen. Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS 6, will power iPhone 5, coming with numerous features such as Maps and improved Siri voice service. Apple’s recent patent also suggested that the next iPhone may have replaceable camera lenses, allowing users to swap their camera for a better one.

And if the new rumor about quad-core processor, side by side with the 4G LTE, it may really put Samsung Galaxy S3 in “shame”, as Foxconn CEO Terry Guo claimed.
