One of two Canadian soldiers hit by a car in a city near Montreal has died and authorities are looking into whether the driver's links to radical Islam had anything to do with the attack.
Quebec provincial police spokeswoman Genevieve Bruno confirmed to the Associated Press Tuesday that one of the two soldiers died from his injuries. She added that the other soldier's injuries were "less serious."
The soldier's name has not been released yet, at the request of the family.
The suspect, Martin Couture Rouleau, 25, was shot and killed by police following a car chase, according to the AP report.
An official" familiar with the case" confirmed the suspect's name and that he had fallen under the influence of radical Islam to the AP. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to speak publicly regarding the incident yet.
The suspect "was known to Federal authorities" and "authorities were concerned that he had become radicalized," said Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesman David Falls said Monday, according to the AP.
Police have yet to provide further details, citing ongoing investigation.
"First and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families; we're closely monitoring the situation and obviously we will make available all of the resources of the federal government," Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said according to the Associated Press.
Rouleau converted to Islam a little over a year ago, according to unidentified neighbors who spoke to reporters. Since then, he has started spending more time alone, grew out his beard and began wearing a tunic.
Quebec provincial police Lt. Michel Brunet said the suspect fled the scene of the attack and was pursued by police for about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) before he lost control of his vehicle. The car then rolled over several times.
Police shot the suspect after he exited the vehicle. Brunet said they found a knife on the ground but he couldn't say if the suspect had it in his hand when police opened.
A large knife could be seen in the grass near the flipped-over vehicle in television images.
