Social-media site Twitter will allow users to play music, audio clips, and podcasts directly from their timelines or message feeds through a new feature designed in partnership with audio-streaming service SoundCloud.
The news was announced in a company blogpost on Thursday.
The social-media service introduced on Thursday what it has called "Audio Card" through which users will be able to listen to a number of content while browsing their timelines, according to the post.
"The world's most influential musicians and media producers already share unique audio content through Twitter every day," Twitter said in a blogpost. "Today we're introducing a new way for you to experience audio directly on Twitter."
So far, Twitter has promised audio from SoundCloud's partners, which includes sources like NASA, CNN, Coldplay and Warner Music.
The company is looking to get more content partners in the future however, Twitter said in its blogpost Thursday.
Twitter hasn't said how Audio Card might evolve, but did stress that it offers musicians the opportunity to post exclusive clips.
"We're just beginning to test the Audio Card and plan to make it available to more partners and creators in the future so that many more musical artists and creators will be able to share exclusive, in-the-moment audio to millions of listeners on Twitter," the company said in a statement in its blogpost.
Twitter had been in discussions to purchase audio-sharing website SoundCloud, which has been called the YouTube of music by fans, as far back as June of this year.
Last month Twitter and Amazon teamed up to allow users to add wish list items from tweets made on the social media website. The site has also been experimenting with a "Buy" button which would allow users to purchase products from test partners directly from a tweet sent out on the site.
