76 New York Subway Stations Are Now Smartphone-Friendly

More New York subway stations should have phone coverage and wireless connection next year as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority rolls out the next phase of bringing mobile capability to the entire system.

Thirty-nine stations are scheduled to have mobile-phone coverage by spring of next year as part of the plan to connect all 277 New York subway stops by 2017, Bloomberg News reported.

"Adding and improving wireless service at more subway stations provides a much-anticipated boost to riders' experience in one of the world's busiest and oldest subway systems, while offering an added level of security," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement quoted by Bloomberg.

The city has completed the second phase of connecting the subway, bringing the total number of covered stations to 76, according to PCMag.com.

The completed phase covers 29 underground stations in Queens and 11 in Manhattan; stops that are now smartphone-friendly include Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Avenue, Jamaica Center, Court Square, 42nd Street Bryant Park, 34th Street Herald Square and Grand Central 42nd Street, PCMag reported.

Phase three's 39 stations will include Fulton Street in Lower Manhattan and Flushing Main Street in Queens as well as stations in west Harlem and Washington Heights.

The newly connected subway stops should cover all users with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or Sprint service, while free Wi-Fi will be available through the "SSID Transit Wireless" network.

According to the MTA, underground wireless service will also cover 911 calls in case of emergency.
