The Lincoln MKS and the BMW 5 Series did not pass muster during recent crash tests conducted by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

After undergoing small overlap front crash tests, 2009-'15 Lincoln MKS sedans received a rating of "poor," while the 2011-'15 BMW 5 Series was given a rating of "marginal," Edmunds.com reported.

The institute additionally tested the 2014-'15 Infiniti Q70 and the 2013 Infiniti M, which each achieved a "good" rating in the small overlap front test.

While the Q70 test saw that "driver space was maintained reasonably well," according to the institute, "the performance of the Lincoln MKS in the small overlap test couldn't have been more different."

During the small overlap front test, "the driver space was severely limited after the crash, with the structure pushing in as much as 12 inches," said IIHS, as quoted by Edmunds. "The dummy's head barely contacted the front airbag before sliding off the left side and hitting the instrument panel."

The BMW 5 Series fared slightly better to earn its "marginal" rating.

"Like the MKS, the 5 Series also saw as much as 12 inches of intrusion," the institute described. "However, there was considerably less intrusion in the upper interior. The dummy's movement was well controlled, with both the front and side airbags doing their jobs."

Those in the market for a large luxury sedan should also take note of other crash test ratings within the segment.

IIHS has given the Hyundai Genesis, Acura RLX, Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and Volvo S80 "good" ratings for the small overlap crash test. Due to safety improvements in the works, the Audi A6, Cadillac CTS and Lexus GS will not be tested until early next year.
