Mazda has announced more details for the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, which will be equipped with a 2-liter four-cylinder engine for the U.S. market.

The MX-5 will run on a 1.5-liter engine in some markets, but all U.S. versions will have the 2-liter engine option, Edmunds.com reported. The redesigned 2016 version will come standard with a manual transmission.

While the transmission is expected to have six speeds, Mazda has not yet confirmed that detail.

The updated, fourth-generation MX-5 Miata is 220 pounds less than the current, 2,500-pound version and "wider, lower and lighter," according to Edmunds.

Mazda calls the new model "the most compact of any generation MX-5 so far."

The automaker will announce engine specifications and pricing closer to the launch date. The new MX-5 Miata will be available in markets worldwide next year and is expected in U.S. showrooms around the end of the second quarter.

Launched last month at events held simultaneously in Japan, Spain and the U.S., the vehicle is intended to help Mazda adapt to stricter fuel economy standards, according to the automaker.

"Environmental and safety demands are much more stringent than they were when the first generation MX-5 was introduced 25 years ago, but the fourth generation stays true to the model's original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can," Mazda said in a statement.

The MX-5 Miata competes with models such as the Mini Roadster and Porsche Boxter.
