Feds Probe Ford Fiesta after Owners Report Door Malfunctions

Federal safety regulators have launched an investigation into Ford Fiesta cars from the 2011-'13 model years after reports that doors can open while the vehicle is moving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began to probe the issue, which is estimated to affect 205,000 Ford Fiesta small cars, after receiving 61 complaints from owners, Reuters reported.

One injury has been cited in connection with the issue. The "door ajar" warning light has appeared on the dash in several cases, while 12 drivers have reported that the door opened after it was closed and the vehicle was moving, according to NHTSA documents.

In one case, a driver said his 83-year-old mother was injured by a door that reopened and hit her after it was closed. He blamed her hip injury, which caused pain for around two weeks, on a bent or broken door latch, the Associated Press reported.

The preliminary investigation into claims that doors in the vehicles fail to close properly or stay latched could eventually lead to a recall depending on what regulators uncover.

Owners who have door latch problems should contact their dealerships, a Ford spokeswoman told the AP.

"We are cooperating with NHTSA on this investigation as we always do," Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker wrote in an email to Edmunds.com.
