Buick dealerships will be working with students at public high schools around the country to help them raise money for their schools, General Motors has announced.

Dealers in six communities piloted the program in May, Edmunds.com reported. Each "Drive for Your Students" event can bring in as much as $10,000, with Buick dealers donating $10 for each test drive taken and then doubling the amount if an event exceeds 100 test drives. The donation will then be shared among the participating schools.

Slated to roll out in 100 communities by the end of the year, the initiative is intended to help mitigate the rising costs of afterschool programs as well as ease school budget deficits, according to GM.

The "grassroots"-style events will additionally give students "valuable real-world experience in helping dealers plan, coordinate and execute events," GM said in a statement.

"Schools are always seeking dynamic opportunities to support their extracurricular activities and elective programs," Bob DeJonge, Keller (Texas) Independent School District director of athletics, said in a press release. "It provides an opportunity for the students to build their resume with relevant work experience and for the community to demonstrate support for the school."

To date, Buick has given around $28 million to students across the country.

Drive for Your Students will be launching gradually at various communities through the end of the year, so interested schools should stay in touch with their local Buick dealership to see if the program will be available in their community.
