Twitter Testing 'Buy' Button to Allow Direct Purchases From Advertisers

Twitter has announced that it is testing a "buy" button in some tweets that allows a mobile device users to purchase something directly from a tweet.

A small percentage of U.S. users will be able to see the button today (Sept. 8), Twitter said in a company blog post.

"Today we are beginning to test a new way for you to discover and buy products on Twitter," the company said. "For a small percentage of U.S. users (that will grow over time), some Tweets from our test partners will feature a "Buy" button, letting you buy directly from the Tweet."

Facebook has also been testing a "buy" button on its website, which would let consumers purchase products advertised on its network, according to the post.

Twitter said an entire purchase could be completed in just a few taps of a smartphone screen.

By tapping the "Buy" button embedded in a tweet, a user will be sent to a shipping and payment information page, which will then be sent to the merchant for delivery.

"Users will get access to offers and merchandise they can't get anywhere else and can act on them right in the Twitter apps for Android and iOS," the company said.

The company has already partnered with social media shopping platforms like Musictoday, Stripe, and Fancy for the initial test, according to the post.

Twitter is hoping to add brands, nonprofit organizations, and artists to the test like Home Depot, Burberry, and rapper Eminem.

The company also addressed security issues in the post as well.

"We built this test experience with your trust and security at the forefront. Your payment and shipping information is encrypted and safely stored after your first transaction, so you can easily buy on Twitter in the future without having to re-enter all of your information," the company said.

Shares in the social media site were up 3.2 percent at $52.33 in early trading, according to Reuters.
