The Golden Gate Bridge saw an unusual sight on Friday--two deer ran across the bridge around 5:30 p.m., apparently joining evening traffic.

Drivers slowed for the animals, and California Highway Patrol was informed of the incident at 5:24 p.m., the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The pair of deer reportedly made their own way off the bridge while CHP officers were still en route to the scene, something that is fairly common for "animal hazards," said CHP Officer William Ogilvie.

"They pretty much created their own traffic break," CHP Officer Andrew Barclay told Bay Area media. "That could be what saved the deer from getting hurt ... If it was lighter traffic the cars would have been moving faster."

The iconic bridge was the setting for another traffic disturbance last month when a Chevrolet Camaro driver decided to do "donuts" on the bridge, leaving tire burns across its three lanes.

The episode was "unbelievably stupid, unbelievably dangerous," according to Kary Witt, bridge manager for the Golden Gate Transportation District.

"A lot of dumb things happen on the bridge, but not this," Witt told the Chronicle. "The margin for error out here is pretty small. It's really kind of shocking when you see people behaving this way."
