After a 10-year run under the name Google Enterprise, the tech giant's business-focused division is getting rebranded as Google for Work.
"The word 'enterprise' starts to mean different things," Amit Singh, president of Google's enterprise division, as quoted by CNET. "Many things that are associated with 'enterprise' are not what we do. Over time that dissonance has gotten bigger."
With the new name, Google wants to emphasize that its business services can help companies of all sizes, not just large corporations, according to Singh. The Google software suite is used by more than 5 million businesses, CNET reported.
The "for Work" designation will be added to Google services such as email and data storage, turning Gmail into "Gmail for Work" and the Google cloud into "Drive for Work."
Google says that upwards of 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies subscribe to some of its paid commercial services, the San Jose Mercury News reported. "Thousands" of Google employees work in the company's commercial services, although Singh did not specify exact numbers.
The company also hasn't released sales figures for its business products, but analysts estimate that commercial services account for around $2 billion of Google's $60 billion in total annual sales and will continue to expand.
"We expect Google's cloud infrastructure revenues to grow quickly over the next couple of years to several billions of dollars a year," said Bernstein Research analyst Carlos Kirjner in a recent report, as quoted by the Mercury News.
Google still makes most of its profit from selling ads, but the company is smart to expand into other services.
"You can't be a one-trick pony," Forrester Research analyst T.J. Keitt told the Mercury News.
