Federal regulators have given the 2015 Honda Pilot four out of five stars overall for safety after conducting three crash tests.

The new SUV model received four stars for the front crash test, five stars after the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test, Edmunds.com reported.

The Honda Pilot, which competes with the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota 4Runner, is available at Honda dealerships.

For comparison, the 2015 models of the Traverse and Explorer received the NHTSA's top rating of five stars after crash tests, while Toyota's 4Runner earned four stars overall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety rating applies to the SUV's front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.

The 2015 Pilot is equipped with six airbags, vehicle stability control with traction control and antilock brakes, according to Edmunds.

Last year's version of the SUV received a "good" overall safety rating from the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but the group has not yet rated the 2015 model.

The Honda Pilot didn't rate so well earlier this year, coming in last in its segment for structure after IIHS testing reported in April. 

Honda responded to the Pilot's "poor" ranking with a statement at the time: "Utilizing the same body structure as the 2014 Pilot, the 2013 Honda Pilot was rated an IIHS Top Safety Pick and, according to IIHS, 2013 Top Safety Pick designees like the Pilot 'continue to offer a high level of protection in four main crash types--moderate overlap front, side, rollover and rear.'"

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox and its twin, the GMC Terrain, were the only cars to earn the highest ranking of "good" in the IIHS test of nine midsize utility vehicles from 2014.
