Apple will introduce a larger, 12.9-inch, version of its iPad in 2015, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Production will begin for the new device in the first quarter of next year.

Bloomberg's report cites "people with knowledge of the matter," who asked the publication not to be named since details are not public yet.

The news comes as Apple continues to deal with declining sales of its 10-inch and 7.9-inch tablets, which aren't selling well since people aren't replacing their iPads as quickly as expected.

Larger smartphones made by rivals like Samsung are also hurting sales.

The Cupertino, California-based company currently makes iPads with 9.7-inch and 7.9-inch displays.

"We're expecting larger tablets to do better" in the enterprise market, Jitesh Ubrani, an analyst at researcher IDC, said to Bloomberg.

Apple has been working with its multiple suppliers for over a year on larger touch-screen devices, Bloomberg reported.

Apple has scheduled a special media event for Sept. 9, and most analysts expect the company to unveil its new iPhone with both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens. Both would be much bigger than the 4-inch screen found on the iPhone 5s and 5c.

Those devices went into mass production in July, and a Sept. 19 release date is expected by a number of media outlets.

Rumored specs for the next iPhone includes: 1704 x 960 pixel resolution, a faster A8 processor, camera upgrades, and a more durable, sapphire screen.

Apple has not officially confirmed anything regarding plans for its next iPhone and iPad to the public yet.
