Recalling a certain sporty BMW from the 1970s, the 2014 BMW M235i is the top model in the German automaker's new 2-series lineup.

The two-door coupe, which is said to be similar to BMW's 2002tii compact from the 1970s, starts at $44,050 with shipping fees in the base trim, the Associated Press reported. The M235i xDrive, which is a four-wheel drive version, begins at $45,850.

In the standard trim, the M235i includes "an electronic locking function on the rear differential, M Sport Braking system, 18-inch, Michelin Pilot Super Sports tires, power moonroof, automatic climate control and Xenon headlights," the AP reported.  

The M235i's outside reflects its sporty driving characteristics, according to the automaker.

BMW describes the compact's exterior as "a three-box body with clearly defined boot and low-slung silhouette, a long bonnet, doors with frameless windows and a dynamically stretched roofline flowing smoothly into the rear end."

The 2-series lineup models all feature Auto Stop-Start technology that turns off the engine when the vehicle is stopped and idling and restarts it when the brakes are released.

Federal testing put the compact's fuel economy at 22 miles per gallon for city driving and 32 mpg on the highway, the AP reported.
