Microsoft has scored the latest "Tomb Raider" video game title as an exclusive for its Xbox console, an announcement that PlayStation fans aren't too thrilled about.

Earlier Tomb Raider titles have been available for Sony's PlayStation as well as PCs and Macs, and the original Tomb Raider game partly rose to success thanks to a close association with the Sony console.

The Xbox exclusive will likely compete with "Unchartered 4: A Thief's End," which will soon be released exclusively for the PS4.

"They have similar dynamics, and are both third-person adventure-style action titles," Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games at the consultancy HIS, told BBC News.

"Unchartered is probably the most anticipated game out of Sony's exclusive, so I think Tomb Raider is a good defensive play."

PS4 owners will still be able to play the franchise spinoff "Lara Croft and The Temple of Osiris" on their consoles when the game is released for PS4, Xbox and PCs in December.

Crystal Dynamics, the video game studio behind Tomb Raider, said that some people have "concerns" about the Xbox exclusivity, but the connection should boost the action title's brand.

Microsoft is excited about the deal, which could spur Xbox sales as they continue to lag behind the PS4.

"We're incredibly excited to have Rise of the Tomb Raider come to our platform in 2015," said Phil Harrison, Microsoft corporate vice-president, as quoted by BBC News. "It's a franchise I've admired for over 18 years, and I can't wait for Xbox One gamers to play the game next year."
