Skully AR-1 Is a Motorcycle Helmet with 360-Degree Visibility

A startup named Skully has introduced a new motorcycle helmet with a rearview camera and an augmented-reality display.

The futuristic helmet is available online for $1,399 and is expected to ship in May 2015, Yahoo Tech reported. Its augmented-reality interface is where the magic happens, showing the rider directions on a display and projecting the 180-degree rearview camera feed.

The startup says its new gadget offers "360-degree situational awareness" and "has undergone extensive road testing." The Skully AR-1 is in beta testing, a process that will continue until May.

Featuring Bluetooth connectivity, the helmet has GPS navigation, speakers, a microphone and voice control, and the battery to power its display lasts around nine hours, PCWorld.com reported.

According to the Skully website, the map display on the Skully AR-1 has two options: a "highly simplified" display that stays when the rearview camera is tapped for the interface as well as a more detailed version for step-by-step driving directions.

The display shows 180 degrees of information from the rearview camera "in a way that is easy to see and understand on the display," the company said.

"This allows you to keep an eye on what is happening behind you without turning your head," Skully said. "It also allows you to monitor your blind spots without taking your eyes away from your direction of travel."

Originally an Indiegogo project funded at $250,000, the helmet can be preordered through the crowdfunding site to ensure that it will ship next year.

The Skully AR-1 "will continue to be tested to ensure the highest quality, functionality and safety," the company said.
