In the latest recall related to faulty ignition switches, Volkswagen has issued a recall for 18,526 Routan minivans that may turn off while driving.

Similar to infamous issues in certain General Motors small cars, the ignition switches can move out of the "run" position and turn off the vehicle while it's moving, increasing the risk of a collision, Edmunds.com reported.

"If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the 'Off' or 'Accessory' position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems, including, but not limited to, airbags, power steering and power braking," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wrote in its summary of the problem.

No injuries, accidents or deaths have been connected with the issue, a Volkswagen spokesman wrote in response to Edmunds.

The recall, which affects models built between June 2008 and July 2010, is an expansion of an earlier recall for the 2010 Volkswagen Routan. The additional recalled vehicles bring the total to around 31,270 in the U.S.

Beginning in August, Volkswagen dealers will conduct the recall by making changes to the ignition switches.

Concerned owners can reach Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987. Prior to the recall, drivers should take all items from the key rings, leaving just the ignition key, before operating the minivan.

Ignition switch problems in GM vehicles have been related to at least 54 crashes and 13 deaths within the past decade. The automaker has agreed to a $35 million federal fine after delaying the recall despite issues that surfaced around 10 years ago. About 2.6 million small cars, including the Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion models, were recalled for faulty switches that could turn off the vehicle if the driver's knee bumped the ignition.
