Virgin Mobile Debuts Custom Data Plan for Mobile Phones

Virgin Mobile has announced a customizable data plan intended to give subscribers as much flexibility as possible for their mobile phones.

Like most data plans, Virgin Mobile's offering lets customers choose their minutes, text messages and data options, but it additionally has special prepaid service packages for particular apps, USA TODAY reported.

Pricing is per month, but Virgin Mobile subscribers are free to alter their data options whenever they like, the company has said.

"If your needs change and you decide you bought too much of one thing and not enough of another, you can change that anytime you want, every day, every week, every month, once a year whatever you decide is right for you," said Dow Draper, the president of Sprint Prepaid Group, as quoted by USA TODAY.

The new billing system comes from the small wireless carrier Zact, which has been acquired by Sprint, according to PCMag.com.

The custom mobile service is launching on Aug. 9 and will start in 1,800 Walmart stores. The plans will begin at $6.98 a month for 20 voice minutes and 20 texts, while unlimited voice and text plans are $35. Unlimited monthly access to apps such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram costs $5 apiece.

Zact's customizable service will be available through three phones sold at Walmart: the $79.88 ZTE Emblem, $99.88 LG Pulse and the $129.88 LG Unify. The last model is the only one that can connect with faster LTE wireless.

Touting the service's transparency, Draper hinted that the data plan could move beyond Walmart in the future.

"This is a new way to buy prepaid wireless," said Draper, as quoted by USA TODAY. "It provides users much greater control over how they use their cellphones and how their families use their cellphones."
