Hyundai is recalling around 883,000 Sonata sedans in the U.S. and Puerto Rico following reports of transmission problems.

Including certain midsize Sonatas from model years 2011-'14, the recall comes after Hyundai became aware of 1,171 warranty claims and seven incidents in connection with the issue, Reuters reported.

The vehicles have problematic transmission-shift cables that can detach from their designated place, resulting in a mismatch between the indicated gear and the engaged gear.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the issue can result in rollaway when a driver puts the car in park but the vehicle is not actually in park and other dangerous scenarios.

About 880,000 of the affected Sonatas belong to owners in the U.S., while the rest are in Puerto Rico, according to the NHTSA.

The documents don't specify if any accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue, said the Associated Press report.

The Sonata is Hyundai's No. 2 bestselling vehicle in the U.S. this year so far, coming in second to the Elantra compact model, according to the AP.

For the recall, Hyundai dealers will inspect the vehicles' transmission cables and repair the connection to the shift-lever pen if needed.

The automaker will inform affected owners through the mail sometime before the end of September. Owners can also contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.
