Safety regulators have opened an investigation into the 2011-'12 Dodge Charger vehicles after receiving consumer complaints of alternator failure.

Approximately 123,000 vehicles could contain the issue, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The safety administration has identified 14 complaints so far which allege "incidents of alternator failure resulting in engine stall while driving with no restart."

"Half of the complaints involved incidents that occurred while driving at or above 40 mph," the NHTSA said in its summary of the probe. "One incident alleges stopping the vehicle in a traffic lane with smoke issuing from the alternator."

One crash has occurred as a result of the issue, though no injuries or fatalities have been reported yet, according to the NHTSA's report.

Federal safety regulators have opened a preliminary evaluation into the matter, but the vehicles have not been recalled at this point.

Such an action often precedes a vehicle recall however.

"Customer safety is paramount at Chrysler Group. Accordingly, the Company is cooperating fully with this investigation," Chrysler said in a statement, according to Edmunds.

For now, owners of the 2011-'12 Dodge Charger will have to wait for federal safety regulators to finish determining what needs to be done next.
