Apple has asked its suppliers to make between 70 to 80 million of its two upcoming iPhones by the end of 2014, its largest initial production run of iPhones ever, according to the Wall-Street Journal.
Forecast for the iPhones, which are expected to come with 4.7-inch (11.9-cm) and 5.5-inch (14-cm) displays, is much larger than the order last year of 50 million to 60 million for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, respectively.
Pegatron Corp. and Foxconn will start mass production for the 4.7-inch iPhones next month, and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, whose parent is Foxconn, will start making the 5.5-inch version in September.
Both iPhone 6 devices will be much larger than the 4.0-inch displays used on Apple's existing iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C models.
The new phones are also rumored to come with metal cases, similar to the iPhone 5S, and will most likely come in a number of color options, according to the Journal.
Both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch devices are expected to use in-cell touch panel technology, built into the screen, allowing for thinner construction than with standard touch panel films, which was introduced with the iPhone 5, according to Reuters.
There might be difficulties with in-cell production technology for the larger 5.5-inch device however.
Apple has asked its suppliers to be prepared to make up to 120 million iPhones, according to the Journal.
Until 20122, 4 inches was considered the largest screen option for most smartphones, but it has since become the minimum starting last year.
Rumored specs for the next iPhone device include: 1704 x 960 pixel resolution, a faster A8 processor, a thinner profile, bezel-free design, camera upgrades, and a more durable, sapphire screen.
A new iOS 8 operating system that the next iPhone will utilize debuted at Apple's 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month.
The next iPhone is expected to be released on September 19.
Apple has not commented on any rumors regarding its next device yet.
