Facebook Wants You To Buy Stuff from Your News Feed

Facebook is testing a new feature that will let its more than 1.28 billion users buy products through select businesses in the U.S.

Called the "buy" button, the service allows Facebook users to purchase items that are advertised on the site, essentially letting people buy things straight from their News Feed, Reuters reported.

The social network, which has received plenty of criticism about its confusing privacy policies, noted that payment information would not be shared with marketers.

"None of the credit or debit card information people share with Facebook when completing a transaction will be shared with other advertisers, and people can select whether or not they'd like to save payment information for future purchases," the company said in a blog post on Thursday.

Facebook said the buy button would be tested with a "few small and medium-sized businesses" in the U.S. The social network is currently not receiving a cut of the profits on items sold through the buy service, a source told Reuters.

The company has been looking for other ways to cash in on its many users worldwide. In 2012, Facebook launched a gifts service to let users buy physical presents including socks and teddy bears for their friends, but it ended the feature after a year, only continuing to offer gift cards.
