Russians have found a strange hole in the middle of Siberia that stretches approximately 260 feet across.

The hole was found in a place called Yamal, which translates to "the end of the world," according to The Siberian Times newspaper.

Footage of the hole was captured on video and later posted on YouTube, causing people around the world to speculate how it got there in the first place.

Russian experts are currently trying to figure out a reasonable explanation which should stop theories like one made by a YouTube user who thinks the hole is an alien landing pad.

Russian scientists have already said that the hole didn't form from a meteorite crash.

"We can definitely say that it is not a meteorite. No details yet," said a spokesman for Russia's Emergencies Ministry.

Anna Kurchatova, a researcher at the Sub-Arctic Scientific Research Center, said to the newspaper that she believes the hole was likely blown out by an explosion of gas trapped in the melting permafrost below, according to the paper.

Footage of the hole was taken by engineer Konstantin Nikolaev on July 11 while passing by in a helicopter.

Experts from Russia's Centre for the Study of the Arctic and the Cryosphere Institute of the Academy of Sciences will assist with an expedition to examine the location.

Soil, water, and air samples will be taken from the scene and a specialist from Russia's Emergencies Ministry will also accompany the team, according to the newspaper.
