Shipments of tablets around the world are expected to best the PC market by sometime next year, despite a slowdown in sales, according to research firm Gartner.
By 2015, mobile devices and PCs will combine to send 317 million units, whereas tablets are expected to reach 320 million.
Gartner says that PCs will cut declines this year, reporting just a 2.9 percent decrease compared to a nearly 10 percent cut in 2013.
"Business upgrades from Windows XP and the general business replacement cycle will lessen the downward trend, especially in Western Europe," said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner, according to USA Today.
Though global tablet shipments continue to grow, a slowdown is expected by many analysts, as the demand for tablets with smaller screens wanes and more people switch to what is known as "phablets," or smartphones with large displays.
Smartphone sales are expected to continue to surge in 2015, according to the research firm.
"The next wave of adoption will be driven by lower price points rather than superior functionality," said Atwal.
Gartner believes smartphones sales will make up 66 percent of the global mobile phone sales in 2014, and 88 percent of sales by 2018.
