Subaru has issued a recall for more than 660,000 vehicles in cold-weather states in the U.S. due to brake lines that can potentially corrode.

The 660,238-vehicle recall comprises the 2009-'13 Forester, the 2008-'11 Impreza and the 2008-'14 Impreza WRX/STI, the 2005-'09 Outback and the 2005-'09 Legacy, Reuters reported.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said brake line corrosion could result in the leaking of brake fluid, rendering the brakes less effective and upping the risk of a collision. The agency report cited a gap through the fuel tank protector that can allow salt water to splash onto the brake lines and cause rust.

Vehicles in 20 states and Washington, D.C., are the only ones affected by the recall, according to the Associated Press. For the related repairs, Subaru dealers will replace brake lines if needed and apply anti-corrosion wax.

Subaru has not said if the recall extends outside the U.S.

2014 has been a major year for recalls in the American auto industry as General Motors' troubles continue with repair after repair. Only about halfway through the year, 2014 is the record for the most cars recalled in the U.S., the total standing at nearly 40 million.
