The 2014 BMW 2 Series luxury model has received a top safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway safety after undergoing multiple crash tests with the nonprofit research group.
Receiving the 2014 Top Safety Pick+ award, the 2 Series also became the first BMW model to earn a "good" or "acceptable" rating in the small overlap front crash test, Edmunds.com reported.
"In the small overlap test, the driver's space was maintained reasonably well," the Institute said in a statement on Wednesday, as quoted by Edmunds. "Injury measures recorded on the driver dummy indicated a low risk of any significant injuries in a real-world crash of this severity.
"The dummy's head made good contact with the frontal airbag, which stayed in position during the crash, and the side-curtain airbag deployed to protect the head from contact with the side structures."
In receiving the Top Safety Pick+ award, the 2 Series joins the 2015 Audi A3, 2014 Infiniti Q50, 2014 Lincoln MKZ and 2014 Volvo S60.
Besides the small overlap front crash test, the 2 Series earned ratings of "good" in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head-restraint evaluations, the last of which applies to models built after June 2014.
The 2 Series also received "advanced" ratings for front-crash protection with the City Braking forward collision warning and braking system, which is an optional feature.
