Tesla Motors has confirmed that it will start deliveries of its Model X crossover vehicle sometime in 2015.

The electric car company sent emails to customers on Monday (June 16) saying that it expects to have prototypes of the Model X built before the end of 2014 and production to start in early 2015, according to CNN.

A recent company statement says that Tesla expects deliveries to start in the spring of 2015.

The same email said falcon-wing doors and all-wheel drive will still be standard on the Model X, though it said a third row of seats are "optional," according to CNN.

The first Model X design was unveiled over two years ago and immediately rang up $40 million in orders.

Tesla has been taking reservations and deposits from customers wanting the Model S, though it has not said how many reservations it has received so far.

The starting price has also not been unveiled yet by the automaker.

The Model S goes for about $69,000.

Total customer deposits for both the Model X and current Model S sedan reached $198 million by the end of March, an increase of 21% from the end of 2013.

Company CEO Elon Musk recently said he expects the next Tesla model to exceed the Model S in popularity and critical praise.

Some Tesla fans aren't happy that the vehicle won't come standard with third row seats however.

"Making 3rd row optional is definitely a disappointment," wrote one potential buyer on the Model X forum on Tesla's site. "It is just another way of increasing the price."

The announcement helped increase Tesla shares 9 percent by the end of trading on Monday. Shares in the automaker are up nearly 50 percent so far in 2014, though they are still off their record high reached back in February.
