Toyota has expanded a recall in Japan for faulty airbags by 650,000 vehicles, bringing the total number of recalled cars with that particular part to 6.5 million in the last five years.

The problematic airbags come from Takata, the second-largest manufacturer of auto safety equipment in the world, Reuters reported. The company said that more recalls from other automakers could stem from potential problems with airbag inflators from the last 10 years.

The Japanese automaker is also repeating a recall from last year for 2.14 million vehicles, renotifying owners to bring in their cars for repairs to the front passenger airbag inflators, according to The Associated Press.

The 2013 recall was the largest recall related to airbags in industry history and followed other recalls, crashes and at least two deaths linked to the issue, Reuters reported. The initial recall was inaccurate due to incomplete serial numbers provided by Takata.

Toyota, Honda, Nissan Motor Co and BMW together recalled around 3.6 million vehicles due to defects in Takata airbags that could result in an explosion if the car crashed. The Tokyo-based supplier had improperly stored chemicals and messed up the production process for propellants that deploy the airbags.

The Toyota recall comprises around 20 Toyota models: certain Corolla compacts and Tundra pickups produced in 2003-'04 as well as certain 2002-'04 Lexus SC 430 coupes manufactured in the U.S.

The 650,000 vehicles in Japan that have been added to the recall were built from 2000-'03.

As part of the latest recall, Toyota plans to replace airbags in 380,000 vehicles that were earlier inspected but did not receive replacement airbag inflators.
