Viber Celebrates 100 Million Active Users with Desktop Update (VIDEO)

Messaging app Viber has passed 100 million active concurrent users as the company spreads to multiple platforms including the standard desktop, iOS and Android as well as Windows and Blackberry.

Recently acquired by Rakuten in a $900 million deal, Viber has 350 million unique downloads on record, according to TechCrunch.

"As usage increases, our priority remains the same--introducing features, adding more platforms and improving Viber with every new version," CEO Talmon Marco said in a statement quoted by PCMag.com. "This is exactly what we've done with the new Viber Desktop, and we're really excited for users to try it out."

Viber has also recently added Portuguese and Spanish, to join existing language options English and Japanese. The messaging app launched an update for the desktop version on Tuesday, showcasing a new style that emphasizes the service's popular Stickers feature.

While 100 million active users is a milestone, the messaging service has some fierce competition not only from regular texting platforms, but also from messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Kik Messenger and more.

Acquired by Facebook in the biggest-ever startup purchase, WhatsApp recently passed half a billion users.

Facebook's $19 billion purchase made privacy advocates somewhat uneasy and inspired the Federal Trade Commission to issue a stern warning to the social network not to violate user privacy.

In the past, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum has stated that messages are deleted after they go through the systems, leaving no data to be mined. The operation has also stayed tight with just 60 employees to date, despite passing 500 million users.
