Chrysler is recalling over 10,000 vehicles to fix a problem with continued unintended acceleration linked to the cruise-control systems, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"When the adaptive cruise control is engaged and the driver presses the accelerator pedal to increase the vehicle's speed more than the cruise-control system would on its own, the vehicle may continue to accelerate briefly after the accelerator pedal is released," said NHTSA in its summary. "The unintended continued acceleration may increase the risk of a crash."

Chrysler is not aware of any related accidents, complaints, or injuries. The automaker did say though that "Customers who are concerned may choose not to activate their cruise-control systems," until the necessary repairs are made.

Other features, like forward collision warning, are not affected because they function independently, Chrysler confirmed in a statement on its website.

"In all cases, brake application will cancel cruise control," the automaker added.

Approximately 10,700  2014 Dodge Durango, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT vehicles are affected by the recall.

Affected Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees were built from January 16, 2014 to April 8, 2014. The affected Jeep Grand Cherokee SRTs were built from February 3, 2014 to April 8, 2014. The affected Jeep Cherokees were built from March 6, 2014 to April 17, 2014.

The problem was discovered during an internal quality audit.

"More than half were in dealer hands or in transit to dealers as Chrysler Group was investigating," the automaker said.

Chrysler dealers are being instructed to upgrade the software that governs the cruise-control systems.

All repairs will be made free of charge. The recall will begin later on this month, according to Chrysler.
