Microsoft has confirmed that it will kick off the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles later today (June 9) with its Xbox press conference, according to USA Today.

Microsoft is looking to fuel momentum for its latest video game console, the Xbox One, which launched in November 2013.

In May, the company announced that it would sell a version of the Xbox One for $399, matching the price of Sony's popular PlayStation 4 console.

Along with the price cut, the lower-cost console also drops the Kinect motion sensor, which had previously been called a critical component to the game console.

"It's unusual that Microsoft responded that quickly," says Digital World Research analyst P.J. McNealy on the new Xbox model, according to USA Today.

The cheaper option is approximately 10 percent more powerful than the earlier model as well, thanks to some processing power that has been freed up, according to Microsoft.

The company claims Kinect is still a core piece of the Xbox One, and Microsoft may prove that this week by introducing additional experiences and games that leverage the device.

Microsoft is expected to use its E3 stage to unveil a number of games Xbox One owners can expect by this holiday season and in 2015.

Updates to franchises like Halo, Gears of War and Sunset Overdrive are expected.

Sony is scheduled to hold its press conference at the expo at 2:00 a.m. BST, 3:00 a.m. CET on June 10.

The company is expected to provide videos for titles like "Drive Club," "The Last of Us Remastered" and "The Order 1886."

A virtual reality headset for the PS4, called "Project Morpheus," is also expected, according to the Examiner.
