Ford has announced that its 2015 Ford Transit wagons will deliver better gas mileage than the Ford E-Series.

The 2015 wagon with either the standard 3.7-liter V6 engine or the optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine will return 19 mpg on the highway and 14 mpg in city driving, an improvement of up to 46 percent compared to the 2014 model with a 6.8-liter V10 engine.

The E-Series vehicle returns 13 mpg on the highway and 10 mpg in city driving.

"The improved gas mileage translates to fuel savings as high as $1,700 annually, based on EPA data," said Ford in a statement this week.

Consumers should keep in mind that the 2015 Transit XL wagon with the optional EcoBoost V6 engine is more expensive than the base 2015 Transit wagon.

Ford says that the 2015 Transit XL wagon with EcoBoost V6 starts at $34,960, including a shipping fee of $995.

The price means the vehicle is $1,865 more than the base 2015 Transit wagon with the 3.7-liter V6 engine.

The Transit wagon is available for $33,095, including shipping.

The 2014 Ford E-150 XL Wagon with a 4.6-liter V8 engine has been listed for $31,225, including a $995 shipping fee.

Fuel economy numbers haven't been posted yet by the EPA for the 2015 Transit vehicle.

The 2015 Ford Transit will arrive at U.S. dealerships this summer.

The Transit competes with similar vehicles like the 2014 Nissan NV, Chevrolet Express, and the Ram ProMaster, among others.
