Facebook Acquires Mobile Data Plan Firm Pryte, Find Out Why

Facebook has acquired another company to help achieve its goal of connecting the world.

The company purchased Prtye, a Finnish business designed to make it easier for mobile phone users in under-developed parts of the world to use wireless Internet apps, according to Reuters.

Facebook, the largest social network in the world with 1.28 billion users, has not disclosed the financial terms of the deal.

It seems that the company is mainly interested in the team behind Pryte, which is led by Chief Executive Markku Makelainen.

The Helsinki-based company is just a year old, though it has "valuable experience and relationships" working alongside wireless operators, including in emerging markets, according to company spokesman Vanessa Chan, who spoke with Reuters.

Prtye has fewer than 30 employees, though it's not currently clear how many will join Facebook.

The deal is Facebook's latest effort to advance its mission of connecting people in under-developed locations around the world to the Internet.

Facebook has joined up with wireless operators in select countries to offer free access to its social network and the company also recently announced it is building satellites and drones that will provide internet access to remote locations around the world.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that one of the company's top priorities going forward is connecting the next "five billion people" to the internet, according to Reuters.

Chan said the deal is expected to close later this month.
