Mazda has announced that the 2015 Mazda CX-5 crossover recently earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2015 CX-5 earned five stars in the side and front crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The rating applies to all-wheel drive versions and front-wheel drive options, according to the NHTSA.

Standard safety features found on the CX-5 include: electronic stability control, antilock brakes and daytime running lights.

Mazda's carryover 2015 CX-5 hasn't been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety yet.

Its predecessor, the 2014 CX-5, is IIHS Top Safety Pick+ however, earning "Good" ratings in every crash test, according to the automaker.

The vehicle also received a "Good" rating in the small overlap front crash test.

The small overlap front crash test was designed by the IIHS to imitate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with an object like a tree or utility pole or another vehicle.

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 competes with similar vehicles like the 2014 Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, among others.

Safety regulators are just starting to post 2015 crash scores, but the 2015 CX-5 has outpaced a number of similar vehicles, like the 2014 Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4.

Both vehicles earned four-star overall ratings.
