PetMatch is an app intended to help you heal after losing a pet--by finding a new animal that looks just like the old one.

The image-based app from the startup Superfish uses algorithms to find a new pet in your area based on a picture of your original dog or cat, TechCrunch reported.

Superfish technology analyzes the animal's face for geometric angles: the shape of its face, the distance between its eyes and the angle of its mouth. Next, the PetMatch app flips through images from PetFinder, which collects data from local animal shelters, to match your beloved pet's picture to similar-looking animals that are waited to be adopted nearby.

The photos include the animal's name, location and description along with contact information for the adoption agency or shelter.

The company launched the app as part of National Pet Month, PCMag.com reported. It can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store.

"Our vision is that visual search will allow people to use any picture as a starting point in their search to find exactly what they are looking for--in real time," Superfish CEO Adi Pinhas said in a statement quoted by PCMag. "We wanted to help speed up the pet adoption process, cutting through the clutter of information on the Web, and ultimately making the experience more efficient and more fun."

Based in Israel and Palo Alto, Calif., Superfish has $20 million in funding and has been working on machine vision technology since 2006, according to TechCrunch. The company's apps, which also include a browser extension and iOS app to locate similar products, have a user base of 100 million people per month.

For its next apps, Superfish is looking to develop visual search features for jewelry and furniture.
