Yahoo Inc. has purchased mobile messaging startup Blink, whose app lets users send messages that will self-destruct at a specific time set by the sender.

The deal was announced by Blink on its website, and comes days after rival Snapchat settled charges with U.S. regulators that accuses the company of deceiving its users by promising that photos sent on its service disappeared for good after a certain time period.

Blink launched in April 2013, according to Reuters.

The company will shut down its app for both Android and iOS platforms within the next couple of weeks after the deal is completed.

Terms of the transaction have not been disclosed yet.

Blink is a product of Meh Labs, a company founded by ex-Google employees Kevin Stephens and Michelle Norgan.

"We built Blink because we believe everyone should be free to show the same honesty and spontaneity in their online conversations as they can in person," the company said.

Yahoo has not commented publicly regarding the deal yet.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has been increasing the company's effort to build its online services for tablet and smartphone consumers.

The search-browser site has acquired a number of small, mobile start-up companies since Mayer took over.

Approximately 430 million people access its mobile products every month, according to Reuters.

Snapchat received a $3 billion buyout offer from Facebook in late 2013, which it rejected. Facebook later acquired Whatsapp for $19 billion, its largest purchase to date.
