Chrysler Recall: 780,000 2010-'14 Vehicles Called Back Over Fire Concern

Chrysler is recalling 780,000 2010-'14 vehicles because an overheated switch could result in a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall affects the 2010-'14 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.

The recall is expected to begin sometime in June 2014.

Affected minivans come with third-row power window vents.

The switch is located on the driver's door, according to the safety administration.

A link was found "between short circuits and beverage spills on the vent switch, as well as direct exposure to moisture from rain, snow or car washes" Chrysler said in a statement posted this week on its website.

Chrysler has been made aware of at least 36 "incidents" as of press time.

Short circuits can cause the affected vehicles to overheat, according to the NHTSA.

"The affected vehicles may experience overheating of the vent window switch in the driver's door armrest," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "An overheated switch may result in a vehicle fire."

All affected minivans were manufactured between August 25, 2010 and October 31, 2013.

Approximately 644,850 of the recalled minivans are currently in the U.S.

The rest of the vehicles can be found in Canada, Mexico and outside the NAFTA region, according to the NHTSA.

Chrysler dealers are being instructed to replace the vent window switch with a newer version.

Repairs will be made free of charge.
