LG Electronics Set to Expand Tablet PC Lineup

LG Electronics has confirmed that it plans to expand its tablet PC lineup with three new tablets in multiple sizes.

The South Korean company said today (May 12) it will add a 7-inch, 8-inch, and 10.1-inch sizes to its G Pad lineup.

The company failed to elaborate on key features or an exact release date for the new devices however.

A showcase will be held sometime in June, according to the No. 2 tech giant.

"Customers tell us that they want a wider range of devices that offer sizable screens without compromising portability," said Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company in a statement, according to NewsFactor.com. "Unlike smartphones, tablets are not one size fits all. So we designed the G Pad Series for a diverse target audience, some who prioritize portability while others want the best multimedia experience possible. G Pad delivers on all counts."

LG first introduced its G Pad back in October of last year. The 8.3-inch model has performed well enough to convince the company that bigger tablets are needed.

The new models are expected to be equipped with "Knock Code," which is an updated feature of its previous "KnockOn" service.

"Knock Code" will allow users to unlock devices simply by tapping the screen several times, according to a company release.

"The challenge now is getting consumers to treat LG with the same level of excitement and brand trust as they do Samsung," Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis, said according to NewsFactor.com. "Samsung has a lot more advertising. Samsung has built its brand trust stronger than LG has. Samsung globally has better distribution than LG."

It's "Q-Pair 2.0" app, designed to connect smartphones tablets, will allow users to receive and send calls and messages through the tablet PCs.

The devices will also be equipped with updated batteries to cut down on charge times, according to the company.

"LG has put the power button on the back. That's certainly unique," Greengart said. "It's different. But it isn't necessarily better."
